Cemetery Tales

Explore Timaru's Cemetery - and the stories behind some of the fascinating people buried there.

The men and women included in these stories include founding pioneers of the district through to 'ordinary' people with stories that provide a unique peek into an aspect of our community's rich heritage. They include early settlers, doctors, businessmen, inventors, sporting pioneers, philanthropists, waterside workers, children, and much more. Of course the collection wouldn't be complete without an occasional dastardly deed or 'tall tale'.

The tours are currently focused on the north-western corner of the cemetery which includes some of the oldest and grandest monuments. More tales relating to those resting in other parts of the cemetery will be added as the tour coverage is developed.

Hours: The cemetery is open to visitors during daylight hours.
